Which 3D filament is most durable? 

The most durable 3D filament depends on what you mean by ”durable” - whether it's mechanical strength, impact resistance, temperature resistance or chemical resistance. Here is a comparison of the most common filaments based on these criteria: 

The most durable 3D filaments 

Nylon (polyamide) 

Characteristics

  • High tensile strength and wear resistance 
  • Flexible and bendable without cracking 
  • Resistant to chemicals and wear 

Disadvantages

  • Hygroscopic (absorbs moisture, which can affect printing) 
  • Requires high printing temperature (240-270°C) and heated build plate 

Use: Gears, bearings, mechanical parts, industrial applications 

Polycarbonate (PC) 

Characteristics

  • Extremely high impact resistance (used in bulletproof glass) 
  • Withstands high temperatures (up to 110-130°C) 
  • Good chemical resistance 

Disadvantages

  • Difficult to print (requires high temperature and closed chamber) 
  • Can deform if the printer does not have sufficiently stable temperature control 

Use: Protective enclosures, tools, structural components 

PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) 

Characteristics

  • Exceptional mechanical strength and chemical resistance 
  • High heat resistance (up to 250°C) 
  • Biocompatible (used in medical implants) 

Disadvantages

  • Very expensive 
  • Requires specialized industrial 3D printers (temperatures of 350°C+) 

Use: Aerospace, medical technology, advanced mechanical components 

PETG 

Characteristics

  • High impact resistance (more flexible than PLA and ABS) 
  • Good chemical resistance 
  • Less shrinkage and cracking than ABS 

Disadvantages

  • Less rigid than ABS and PC 
  • May become stringy during printing 

Use: Functional parts, water-resistant components, durable prototypes 

ABS 

Characteristics

  • Good mechanical strength 
  • Withstands heat better than PLA (up to 100°C) 
  • Relatively impact resistant 

Disadvantages

  • Requires heated building slab and preferably an enclosed writing chamber 
  • Emits fumes when printing 

Use: Consumer products, casings, toys 

Summary - which filament is most durable? 

  • Most sustainable overall: PEEK (but expensive and difficult to print) 
  • Best industrial option: Polycarbonate (PC) 
  • Best for mechanical parts & wear resistance: nylon 
  • Best easy-to-print option: PETG 

If you need a balance between strength, ease of printing and durability, the PETG or Nylon usually the best choice. If you need extreme durability for industrial applications, then PC or PEEK the right choice.
