What is a Litofani and how does it work?

What is a Litofani?

A lithophane is an art form that uses light and shadows to create detailed images on thin, semi-transparent materials. When light illuminates the back of a lithophane, it penetrates through the different thicknesses of the material, creating a fascinating image with depth and detail. Darker areas are thicker and block more light, while lighter areas are thinner and let more light through.

How does a Litofani lampshade work?

Image processing: A digital image is converted into a 3D model where different shades of gray represent different thicknesses in the material. This model is the base for lithophane.
3D printing: The model is printed with extremely accurate FDM printing and a 0.2mm nozzle, ensuring a high level of detail. The material used is white PLA, a durable and environmentally friendly plastic material.
Light show: When the lampshade is illuminated from within by a light source, the image appears clearly, creating a beautiful and unique play of light in the room. The light is filtered through the different thicknesses of the lithophane, creating sharp contrasts and giving the image depth.

Uploading instructions (time estimate: 5-10min)

Follow the steps below carefully so that we can print your lampshade with the best results.

Start by opening a program like Microsoft Powerpoint or any other program of your choice. Once there, insert a box with an aspect ratio of 7:2. As long as the aspect ratio is 7:2, it doesn't matter what the dimensions of the box are. But the aspect ratio should always be 7:2, as in the picture below.
Insert the images you want to appear on the lampshade. Put them on the same side as the box you drew in the previous step. See example in the image below.
Crop and resize the images so that they all fit into the box you drew in step 1. See example in the image below. So you put the images here, they will end up on the lampshade. So it is in this step that you design your lampshade. The pictures should fill the whole box without sticking out from the edges!
Once you have all the images in the box, select them by right-clicking while holding down the Ctrl key. This way you can select all the images. Alternatively, you can click, hold down and drag over all the images. Once you have all the images selected, right-click on them and select ”save as image”, or ”save as picture” as in the example below.
Once you have saved the image, you are ready to upload it further up this page where it says ”Upload image”. After this you are ready to pay. We will start your printing right after payment.

Assembly instructions for 3D printed Litofani lampshade

The lampshade fits with a range of lamp bases and lamp holders. As long as the lamp holder and the lamp base have a 40 mm fit. E27 sockets usually have a 40 mm fit on the outside. We have used a lamp holder from Clas Ohlson (the first link in the list below) which has a 40 mm thread. The picture below shows where the lampshade should be threaded on.
